Wildland Fires In Running Springs Smolder - Day 6

Improved weather conditions played an important role in allowing firefighters to make good progress on constructing fire containment lines today. Early this morning there was an additional structure loss in the Running Springs area, bringing the total to 201. Structure protection groups went door-to-door performing heat checks on all residences within the fire perimeter. Damage assessment teams are surveying the areas to provide accurate data for mountain residents. Image Credit: KBHR 93.3FM

Structure fire in Arrowhear is not related to the Slide fire; don't want folks thinking fire has advanced into that area.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 10:57:20
Initial reports of the Arrowbear fire indicated there were explosions - before or after the fact, who knows.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:01:50
the yellow banana helicopter is at the big bear air port, saw it this morning resting

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:15:13
xxxx the fire is still above lake view point with very very little movement , we have had only 1 major hot spot this morning that air craft lifted off around 7:30 to pick up and kill, so yes we are doing great guys, the ffs are dealling with hot spots that flare up thats normal- and re inforcing fire breaks

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:15:31
I would suspect that if things remain good for our fire (Slide) they will have 50% or more containment by tonight.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:16:36
2nd part with the hand crews and dozers, they are still reinforcing all the fire breaks on this mountain from arrowhead to running springfs and from green valley lake to butler peak, so work goes on and if some where some tree or ground fire flars up we do have air craft on hold here at the air port holding

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:18:39
Per scanner, Structure fire knowcked down in Arrowbear.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:24:34
the loud air craft you all might be hearing is one of the helos going back for refuling or retardant to reinforce lines, nothing major they are just loud it goes over my home

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:41:34
per scaner aa we are going to support the ground crews with air attack

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 11:46:12
Map of the location of that structure that went up in Arrowbear this morning. Not related to the Slide fire.

There are reports of a fully involved structure fire at Music Camp Road and Highway 18 in Arrowbear Lake. Reports indicate there may have been an explosion at the house. Civilian injuries have been reported with a medical airship en route. The fire appears to not be associated with the Slide Fire. The cause is not known. Not good news on the Arrowbear Music Camp...

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 12:15:15
Per Scanner: Order up the air tankers please. We will take all 8 of them.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 12:15:32
per scanner order all 8 air tankers we will take all 8 ( unknown location for what area at this time

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 12:17:30
Not 100% sure xxxx. I can't imagine them ordering up 8 air tankers for this fire, but I just dont know. It was fairly clear and on our air attack freq, but it could be transmissions from the Santiago fire. I'll try to figure it out.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 12:18:46
the sun is out here in big bear lake west, with lite blue sky,

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 12:52:37
I think it's picking up some of the OC fire stuff, that's not up hear... I even heard we'll take all 8 air tankers, which we don't need, so I think it's bleed over.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 12:54:56
OK, it's certainly possible that you'd hear stuff. Could be overlap in 800MHz channels, or more likely you hear aircraft traffic. It's a relatively clear shot from the Santa Anas to BB, especially from the East end of the valley.

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 13:10:19
per rotw( per scanner , chp helo is bringing in some dignitaries to view the fire, - guess they going to have ca secretary of state on board, or something like that - helio 534 has lifted off of heaps peak , to the slide to take picturs of the point of orgin

Saturday 27 October 2007 - 13:24:12
It could be the Gov. He was just in Irvine

RIMOFTHEWORLD.net is reporting -

Currently there are 643 personnel on scene of the Grass Valley Fire. Good progress continues with line construction in the Miller Canyon drainage. Fire crews continue to mop up and patrol around structures on the eastern flank. On the western and northern flanks, improvement to the hand and dozer lines and continued mop up is in progress. Rehabilitation will continue.

There is no anticipated incident movement.

Infrared flights flew the fire to determine the fire has burned 1,140 acres. Damage assessment teams continue their work. Reports indicate 162 structures have been destroyed and 20 structures damaged.

No changes in acreage or containment have been released on the Slide Fire. According to official reports, low intensity fire behavior with active surface and backing fire has been observed. Some torching has also occurred. The fire continues to have a potential to move to the north. Crews are making progress containing the fire's spread on west and northwest flanks. Southerly containment lines in the southwest corner of the fire are complete.

Officials state they are beginning to achieve success with perimeter control strategy as critical resource needs are met. There are 1,984 personnel working this fire.

The Slide Fire is 35% contained and has consumed 13,800 acres. Over two hundred structures have been lost. There is no estimate of release of the Damage report.

The cause remains under investigation

Firefighters battling as many as 20 major fires in Southern California gained ground in extinguishing blazes that caused the largest evacuation of residents in the state's history and as much as $2.5 billion in damage.

As far as the continuing fires burning in the San Bernardino National Forest, the Grass Valley Fire around the Northwest side of Lake Arrowhead has burned 1,100 acres and is 70% contained … the Slide Fire located between Snow Valley Ski Area to the West and the Running Springs communities to the East burned 11,675 acres and is 15% contained.

The winds are expected to remain calm today but are to increase blowing back to the East threatening the homes to the South of Running Springs, Arrowbear and the forest near Snow Valley Ski Area.

The fires throughout Southern California, all were having a better go of it and great gains have been made. Qualcomm Stadium is expected to be restored to a sports facility from an evacuation location by the end of the day today. It is still unknown if the San Diego Chargers will be able to have their home game be played there on Sunday, but that is the goal.

California Firefighters Gain Ground as Winds Ease
By Peter J. Brennan – Bloomberg – Oct. 26, 3;06am PT

Firefighters in Southern California gained ground in extinguishing blazes that caused the largest evacuation of residents in the state's history and as much as $2.5 billion in damage.

Santa Ana winds, which bring hot air from the desert, subsided yesterday, making it easier for firefighters to try to contain the five most destructive blazes, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. More than 12,000 firefighters were battling 13 remaining blazes.

“Due to a good weather day, we were able to make progress on containment of the fires,'' said Zachary Young, a spokesman for the governor's office of emergency response.

U.S. Border Patrol agents found four bodies burned in a canyon east of San Diego, Cable News Network said. If confirmed as fire-related deaths, it will bring the death toll from the blazes to seven. About 55 people have been injured, Young said.

The National Weather Service is forecasting lighter winds over the next two days and stronger winds blowing inland from the Pacific Ocean picking up Oct. 28, which may push fires in the opposite direction, it said.
----
President George W. Bush yesterday flew to California to survey the damage, saying the federal government wouldn't forget about the area in the coming weeks. He declared a “major disaster'' in the region, meaning the federal government will be providing assistance for firefighting and rebuilding.
----
Bush was criticized for the slow federal response in 2005 to Hurricane Katrina, which flooded New Orleans. Bush and Schwarzenegger praised each other for their reactions to the fires. “It makes a big difference when you got somebody in the state house willing to take the lead,'' Bush said.

Blazes have scorched at least 719 square miles (1,869 square kilometers) since Oct. 21.

Officials revised the number of homes destroyed to 1,342 from 1,400 the previous day and the number of businesses destroyed to 34 from 104, according to state statistics. About 20,900 structures were in danger, down from 45,000 yesterday.

Five people in San Diego, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties have been arrested on suspicion of arson, the Associated Press reported. The detainees haven't been linked to any of the major blazes.
----
The rescue efforts haven't been without criticism. U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter, a Republican, complained that the authorities were slow to deploy military aircraft. Officials said that was because of the winds, not bureaucracy. Still, some returning residents complained that they were needlessly evacuated or were given little assistance. Others expressed praise.

Dave Farcas, 74, dismissed complaints as he returned to his condominium in Del Mar yesterday. “I thought they were remarkable,'' he said of public officials.

Updated Numbers on the Slide Fire and Grass Valley Fire

The Grass Valley Fire, still at 70% containment over 1,100 burned acres, has an updated burned structure count of 160 structures, per fire officials this morning. More details are expected, with regard to structure loss.

On the Slide Fire, which is at 15% containment with the structure loss tally still at 200 plus homes, the new burned acreage tally is 13,378 acres.
----
Fire Crews Concentrated Near Snow Valley; Big Bear Events and Closures

The updated reports on the Slide and Grass Valley Fires, as of this morning, is that they have achieved improved containment on both fires. Over 2,100 firefighters are at work on both blazes.
----
Firefighting crews have concentrated efforts on the 13 Turns section of Highway 18, both day and night, to ensure that the Slide Fire does not cross the highway between Snow Valley Ski Area and Green Valley Lake Road. John Miller of the U.S. Forest Service spoke to us directly from this area this morning, and reports that this is a ground fire, and most trees along the roadway do remain intact.

However, the fire did reach the roadway, from about a ¼ mile west of the top of 13 Turns and down to near the Green Vally turnoff. Still, Miller tells KBHR, “There are a ton of crews there, putting out hot spots.” That said, he reassures us, “The threat to Big Bear is minimal.”

There is one hot spot that is reportedly visible from the Highway 38 area, and this is directly north of Snow Valley along the ridgeline. The fire, Miller notes, “is in the timber and that's what's creating all the smoke. It is one concentrated area. Crews are there, and there is aircraft working it as well.”

Given today's blue skies in the Big Bear Valley, we will see columns of smoke but again, Miller says, “The threat to Big Bear is low.”

In other Big Bear news related to the fires, Big Bear Lake does remain closed to all boating activity today, to allow for safe water pulls by aircraft for fire suppression. In a conversation Scott Heule, General Manager of the Municipal Water District, last night, he did stress his gratitude to boaters for their gracious compliance.

Bear Valley Unified School District tells us that Saturday's Bears football games and the cross country meet will be rescheduled—our teams will not have to forfeit.

The football games against 29 Palms have not yet been rescheduled; the cross country meet will now be held at Yucca Valley on Wednesday, October 31. The BBHS performances at the Performing Arts Center are on for Saturday, at both 1pm and 7pm. Tickets for Thursday and Friday performances will be honored, space permitting. As of today's fire situation, BVUSD does plan to have schools open on Monday.

Other events still on for this weekend include Saturday's final day of Oktoberfest, from noon to midnight; the Soroptomists will still hold their Halls of Horror Haunted House at Snow Play Mountain on Saturday, from 5 to 10pm, and a less-scary version on Sunday, from 4 to 6pm (cost is $5); and the Discovery Center will still hold their Feast of the Harvest Moon, featuring Native American culture, on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Also, the Bloodmobile is in town today, if you have an hour to give blood, at Stater Bros. until 4pm today.

And, once again, access to Big Bear, via Highway 38 and Highway 18 through Lucerne Valley is open to all traffic. Officer Gary Fernandez with the California Highway Patrol reiterated for us today, “There are no checkpoints. Highways 18 and 38 are checkpoint free.”

Given that the front way of Highway 18 is closed, we would like to remind you that businesses in Fawnskin and the Boulder Bay area remain open, and would appreciate the support and patronage of the Big Bear community this weekend

Wildland Fires Continue In San Bernardino - Day 4

Slide Fire Map - With most of the active fire in rugged wilderness areas south and east of Running Springs, very little new information was available overnight. Crews worked overnight to continue to douse hot spots and shore up fire lines. Winds subsided and slowed the progress of the fire. The Grass Fire in the Lake Arrowhead area showed very little activity, with some limited burning well within the fire's perimeter. The Slide Fire near Running Springs did have some active burning with 3 to 6 foot flame lengths reported overnight. Image Credit: ROTW

Both suspects were originally caught in the act, one while starting a fire at the base of the San Bernardino National Forest on Tuesday evening at about 8:30pm and the other, while trying to set scrub ablaze near the campus of a university in the city of San Bernardino at around 6:00pm Tuesday. This suspect is described as a 27-year-old man with a home address in Arizona. Sheriff’s investigators will search his impounded pickup truck pending a search warrant, Lt. Scott Patterson of the San Bernardino Police Department said yesterday afternoon.

The suspect in custody, identified as John Alfred Rund, 48 (DOB: 01/21/59) from Hesperia, will be arraigned on charges related to arson today.

As far as the continuing fires burning in the San Bernardino National Forest, one has died down and is about 40% contained and the other remains a problem as it changed direction from the Northwesterly direction to burning back around to the Southwest. This threatens the homes to the south of Running Springs and Arrowbear and the forest near Snow Valley Ski Area. The positive development today is that the winds have subsided and this will slow things down a bit for the firefighting crews to gain some containment.

Per ROTW:GVL update - ...spoke with the fire captain who made a run through Green Valley Lake today. He told them their homes (On Juniper) were fine, as were most homes on Juniper, with the exception of the 5 that were on the cul-de-sac. Those were sadly lost, as I think everyone already knew. There is also a home on some 'point' of the lake that was unfortunately lost. Most homes on Angeles around & up against the ski lift/park are gone, as are the 2 homes next to Fox Lumber. There are also several homes gone near the camp ground.

Excerpts from a mid-afternoon report at KBHR 93.3FM -

Super Scooper Taking Water from Big Bear Lake; Guard Against Smoke -- Update as of Noon

Big Bear Lake is closed to all boaters until dusk today, as water is being taken from the lake to battle the Slide and Grass Valley Fires.

There are currently 10 helicopters and four airtankers battling the blazes and, as of today, the Super Scooper is here to assist in water drops. The Super Scooper is a large, amphibious twin-engine airplane that can skim the lake for a large quantity water pickup, so if you see a large yellow and red airplane flying low over the lake, just know that it is here to assist in fire suppression efforts.

As for aircraft, the Big Bear City Airport is now under the control of a temporary air traffic control tower, under contract from the Federal Aviation Administration. The temporary tower will take care of all traffic on the airport grounds, as well as air traffic in the immediate area of the airport. Firefighting aircraft are then turned over to air attack as they near the fires.

As of Wednesday afternoon, our local airport was host to four Type I helicopters, these are the larger type with the largest capacity. Also on site at the Big Bear City Airport are two medium-sized Type II helicopters, as well as two smaller Type IIIs.

Fixed Wings And Smokey Skies - Image Credit: Ray via Socalmountains.com

We can expect continued smoke and ash in our area this afternoon, as the inversion layer continues to trap this smoke within the basin of the Big Bear Valley. When and if the smoke clears, John Miller of the U.S. Forest Service tells us, “Flames may be visible from the Big Bear Dam, but we still do no consider the Slide Fire a threat to Big Bear.”

With regard to smoke in our area, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health says that these conditions can be hazardous for young children, the elderly, and individuals with heart conditions or chronic lung diseases, such as asthma and bronchitis. Health Officer Margaret Beed suggests that these people remain on their medication, and be sure to have at least a five-day supply on hand.

Blowing dust, ashes and other debris can be irritating and dangerous for eyes, so it is suggested that individuals outdoors wear sunglasses to deflect materials in the air. For specks in the eye, do not rub eyes; instead, try lifting the upper eyelid outward and down over the lower lid, and allow tears to wash the speck out. If indoors, it is best to have re-circulated air, rather than outside smokey air, entering the home. When smoke is present, Health Officer Beed advises staying indoors with the doors shut, avoid physical exertion, keep your airways moist by drinking lots of water, and avoid cooking and vacuuming, as this can increase indoor pollutants.

As for the fires prompting these smoke warnings, updated reports remain at 12,466 acres burned on both the Slide and Grass Valley Fires, with over 1,500 firefighting personnel on scene, under the direction of both Type I and Type II national incident management teams. Despite the potentially visible flames, the Big Bear area does remain safe from imminent threat at this time. Still, in our mountain communities during fire season, it is always a good idea to make sure that dead vegetation, especially pine needles and leaves, are cleared from around homes and, while you're at it, be sure not to overlook pine needles in roofline gutters, as these can be easily ignited by flying embers.

Slide Fire Is Now 10% Contained; Grass Valley Fire Still at 40% -- Update as of 3pm

Active fire suppression efforts continue on the Slide Fire, burning in the Running Springs area, and the Grass Valley Fire, in the Lake Arrowhead area.

Updated statistics on the blazes will not be available until this evening but, in the meantime, here is the status on the burns: Over 12,000 acres have burned between the two, though they have not merged. At least 200 homes have burned in the Slide Fire, and officials tell us that specifics on those structures destroyed will be verified as soon as it is safe for fire personnel to enter the burned areas.

Fire perimeter containment on the Slide Fire has been slow due to rough terrain, heavy vegetation and high density residential properties intermixed with Bark Beetle killed timber - however, good news from Incident Command is that, as of this afternoon, 10% containment has been achieved on the Slide Fire. Crews are continuing with structure protection and fire suppression efforts along Highway 18. At last count, the Grass Valley Fire is at 40% containment and 100 plus homes have been burned in this area but, again, officials report that no additional structures were destroyed in the Grass Valley Fire on Wednesday.

As of today, the Super Scooper, a large, amphibious twin-engine airplane has joined fire suppression efforts, in addition to 14 other aircraft, capable of water drops. As the Super Scooper is able to fly over Big Bear Lake, while retrieving water, our lake will be closed to all boating activity until dusk this evening.
We can expect continued smoke in our area today. To that end, the Bear Valley Unified School District has canceled school for tomorrow, Friday, as well, after reviewing the report of the Air Quality Management District.
----
Both highways at the east end of Big Bear Valley, Highway 18 through Lucerne and Highway 38, are open to all traffic.

Despite the smoke in our area and the possibility of visibile flames at Big Bear's west end, we have been assured by fire officials that there is no threat to the Big Bear Valley at this time.

We open up this day with the telling of a report heard and seen on FOX NEWS, told by Adam Housley as he stood in front of a burned out cabin in Running Springs. With gasline flames whipping up behind him giving off a light source that showed the silhouette of burnt Ponderosa Pines in the background, Adam told of how authorities nabbed an arsonist in the act as he attempted to flee.

The exact location is unknown, but as Adam shared, the CHP had a scouting helicopter up in the air to survey and coordinate activities on the ground. Looting had been a problem and access roads leading to the mountains had been shut down so the CHP Officer, while cruising on patrol, spotted a man near a parked Harley-Davidson motorcycle trying to light bushes on fire along the side of the mountain road. The helicopter Officer knew where the closest CHP unit in the area was working and alerted the patrol car Officer to the location of the sighting. The Patrol Officer swung into action and was able to nab the escaping arson suspect before he was able to get away and possibly light more fires.

It is not known whither or not this person is responsible for either the Grass Valley or the Slide fires now raging in the San Bernardino National Forest.

This photo provided by the European Space Agency ESA on Tuesday shows the Envisat's MERIS image, acquired on Oct. 22, of desert winds blowing smoke from wildfires in Southern California. The Grass Valley and Slide Fires smoke trail is at the very top-center of the photo. Sand is also visible being blown from Mexico's Baja California Peninsula over the Gulf of California to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Image Credit: AP/ESA via FOX NEWS

Type II Incident Management Team Now Overseeing Slide & Grass Valley Fires -- Update as of 9am

The Slide Fire, in the Green Valley Lake and Running Springs area, and the Grass Valley Fire, in the Arrowhead area, continue to burn but there is still no immediate threat to the Big Bear Valley.

As of yesterday evening, Incident Command on the fires is being overseen by a Type II national incident management team, with a Type I team due in today, to oversee fire suppression efforts on the Slide Fire, which, as of this morning, has over 500 firefighting personnel on scene.
----
Voluntary evacuations are also in effect for Cedar Pines Park and Valley of Enchantment and the City of Highland, between Highway 330 and Weaver Avenue, north of Highland Avenue.

Per fire officials, mountain residents ordered to evacuate and in need of shelter are advised to go the Victorville Fairgrounds at 14800 7th Street in Victorville. This center is accepting people and horses. To access the fairgrounds, evacuees can take Highway 18 downbound to Highway 138 to the 15 North, then exit at Palmdale.

For Big Bear residents, Highway 18 through Lucerne Valley and Highway 38 through Mentone both remain open.

Latest reports from Incident Command on the Slide and Grass Valley Fires tell us that 4,000 acres have burned on the Slide Fire, which has resulted in the loss of approximately 200 homes in the Running Springs and Green Valley areas. The Grass Valley Fire is now at 5% containment with 1,000 acres burned and at least 100 structures lost.

Though there is no immediate threat to Big Bear communities, residents may want to take this opportunity to continue clearing defensible space around homes. The City of Big Bear Lake continues the Neighborhood Chipping Program at the west end of Big Bear Valley, for all neighborhoods west of Delamar and Tamarack through Sunday, October 28.

Phone interview with USFS PIO, John Miller - The westward movement of the slide fire has stalled just to the east of the dump on the ridge with the towers. Damage assessment teams have started in the Grass Valley area and are moving east. They will release damage maps as soon as they are complete. They should have some detail. The fire in Green Valley Lake has moved down towards 18 and Snow Valley, less than 1/4 mile from road. Heavy activity in the Fedalba, Smiley Park area with heavy damage. Fire has traveled east under the south side of RS to the Rimwood Ranch area there will be a briefing at the Orange Show Evacuation Center for the Crestline area later today but no time as of yet. Super scooper aircraft and helo's will be working the fires and more resources are moving in from out of state and from Canada.

We, at MAXINE, do not know if this answers the question posed about the integrity of the “Nordic Tract” … but the phrase “Fire has traveled east under the south side of RS to the Rimwood Ranch area” would give me pause. We will keep our eyes peeled as to information concerning this area near Hoffman Elementary School.

Police caught Arsonist attemping to start fire in San Bernardino Mountains
Posted By: Petew1971 - CF Senior Member

Yesterday in the evening some *!@#% on a motorcycle was trying to start a fire in the Valley of Enchantment, Crestline area. If he would have been successful the fire would have come at us from the East and headed into the Other fires, it would have completely wiped us out. Some eye witnesses saw this scumbag and held him until officers could arrive.

So, this evidence would suggest that the two accounts relate to one event featuring only one ARSON suspect.

Was in Running Springs between 2pm and 5pm. FYI... Town was fine, but it was burning heavily behind Don's Garage. Traveling south from behind town, many structures were on fire all the way to the Korean retreat and near the Castle (although these structures were NOT on fire at the time). Homes between HWY 18 and Sunset, up and down the hill to City Creek rd were in tact at 3PM. Homes along Panorama Drive as of 3PM were fine, with lots of thick smoke from above HWY 18 and burning up the hill from below HWY 330. {Note: Personal THANK YOU from RS transcriber for the info on Panorama Drive.}

We had a confirmation from a fire fighter that Overhill Drive and Onacrest Drive in Running Springs is in pretty good shape. There was property damage toward the east ends of those roads, but the majority of the homes on those streets were in good shape as of 8:00 last night (Tuesday night).

I have been in contact w/Don's Towing in Running Springs (The Village) a few times today as my parents have a house on 31930 Pine Cone Dr. The representative at Don's Towing has been in close contact with a CHP Officer who they work with on a regular basis (w/towing incidents) and she assured me that Pine Cone Dr. (just behind the town of Running Springs & Jensen's Market) is ok and NO damage has been reported. {Transcriber's note: yesterday there were reports of an address on Pine Cone that was in imminent danger. This is excellent news that there has been no damage.}

Took a drive (at about 11:30 am) over to Twin Peaks to check on specific addresses for three friends.

We turned right onto Walnut Hills and followed it all the way until it turns into Spyglass and continued along Spyglass until it comes out onto Fairway. All good except the home at 26150 Walnut Hills was badly damaged and the home next door to it (on the same side of the street but with a lower street number) was burned to the round.

From Spyglass and Fairway all looked fine, but the fire appeared to have burned the forest right up to the backyards of the homes along the north side of this stretch of Fairway.

From Fairway we turned north onto Brentwood, then north onto Sonoma, crossing Sutter. The houses on east side of Sonoma look ok, on both the north and south sides of this part of Sutter (at its southern intersection with Sonoma).

We crossed Placer, and things still looked ok. There continued to be charred trees on the west side of Sonoma but the houses (which are on the east side) seem ok.

We crossed the intersection with the northern end of Sutter. One house on the left (west) looks gone, just north of the northern intersection. across the street from 715 Sonoma. The houses on the right (east) side of Sonoma look ok, including 715, 725, and 735 Sonoma. The next house on the left also looks ok. In fact, everything looks ok for a while.

We crossed Amador (on the left), staying on Sonoma, and things continued to look ok.

The most heavily damaged area that we saw began just north of 875 Sonoma (which was still standing). The homes at 899, 905, 915, 935, 945, and 955 Sonoma all burned to the ground. These are all on the east side of the street. The next house to the north appeared to be ok (I didn't get its number), but another structure to the north (perhaps just a parking deck or garage?) was burned. Powerlines were down across the road, but the fire crew that was there said it was ok to drive across them.

We crossed Amador again, farther north. It looked like several houses were gone on this part of Amador, to the east of Black Oaks Drive (Sonoma turned into Black Oaks). We crossed Windward, the houses seem ok

We crossed Black Oaks Court on the left (west) side of Black Oaks Drive and did
not notice any damaged homes, although we did not drive into the court. The four houses at the north end of Black Oaks drive (two on each side of the street, 1025, 1031, 1034 and one other) looked undamaged.

We passed quite a few fire men and law enforcement officers, but no one stopped us or asked what we were doing. Grandview and Brentwood both had "road closed" signage at their north ends, but there didn't seem to be anyone enforcing this.

have a new assignment for you; come into Running Springs, turn onto Mountain View there by Jensens; go back to Pine Cone and come down to Preston. It's coming around and going to bump up against town again.

Hesperia Man Arrested for Arson Last Night, for Brush Fire Off Highway 173

We have just received word from the California Highway Patrol, that John Alfred Rund of Hesperia has been arrested for arson. Here is the complete text of the CHP press release, sent to KBHR today:

On October 23, 2007 at approximately 8:50 pm, CHP Officer Chris Denkers and Officer Bill Hatcher from the Victorville CHP area were assigned to a wildfire traffic control post on SR-173 at Arrowhead Lake Road. Both Officers were informed by a witness that a brush fire was starting on SR-173 south of Arrowhead Lake Road.

Officer Denkers contacted the Barstow Communication Center and responded to the scene, where he observed four individuals attempting to extinguish the brush fire by using shovels and dirt. Witnesses at the scene informed Officer Denkers that a suspicious individual was seen squatting down near the point of origin and left the scene on a Honda motorcycle. The individual was wearing a red and white striped helmet.

CHP helicopter H-80 piloted by Officer Rowland Barry and Flight Officer Mike Adams immediately responded to the scene and began an aerial search using infrared equipment. A responding San Bernardino County Fire Engine advised that the motorcycle was heading toward the road closure on SR-173 at SR-138. Officer Barry spotted the motorcycle and followed it into an address on SR-173.

The helicopter crew then directed CHP and San Bernardino County Sheriff's personnel to the location where they made contact with the subject.

After further investigation, John Alfred Rund, 48 (DOB: 01/21/59) from Hesperia, was arrested for arson.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Detail, along with San Bernardino County Fire Department, will be conducting an arson investigation. The investigation is ongoing and it is unknown if John Rund is connected to any other fire in San Bernardino County, as the cause of those fires has not been determined.

The outcome of this arrest is due to the combined efforts of local concerned citizens along with the multi-agency law enforcement presence in the San Bernardino mountains.

San Bernardino County Supervisor Dennis Hansberger received the news of the arrest and said, “I am heartened to hear of the arrest and pleased that we are remaining diligent to bring about safety in our county.”

Smoke Expected in Bear Valley; Grass Valley Fire Now 30% Contained; Winds Push Slide Fire Southwest; Big Bear Safe -- Update as of 5pm

There will be smoke in the Big Bear Valley this evening, but we can report to you, with assurance, that there is still no imminent threat to the Big Bear area resulting from the Slide Fire and Grass Valley Fire.

John Miller of the U.S. Forest Service tells KBHR this evening, “Right now, we do not feel that there is a threat to Big Bear, but residents of Big Bear Valley can expect heavy smoke.” This smoke, rising in our direction, is in part because the Santa Ana winds are diminishing and, also, due to an inversion layer, per fire officials.
----
The Slide Fire, burning in the Running Springs area has been active, but is moving in a southwest direction, away from the Big Bear Valley. All sources confirm that the two fires have not merged.

The Slide Fire, we're told, has also not reached the burn areas of the Butler and Butler #2 Fires from September. As further reassurance, Miller tells KBHR, “There are over 21 square miles of recently burned vegetation that sits between Fawnskin and the Slide Fire. The recently burned areas could be a benefit in slowing any progress from the other fires.”

Though updated numbers have not yet been available in terms of structure loss on the Slide and Grass Valley Fires, we can expect some updated information on Thursday. Tom Kempton at Incident Command tells us that because the Grass Valley Fire has slowed some today, crews are in the area to do mop up work around burned structures, and anticipate being able to present a count of burned homes on Thursday.

At this time, the count remains at at least 100, with an additional 6,000 structures still threatened. The Grass Valley Fire is now reported as 30% contained, with nearly 550 firefighters assigned, including 99 engines. One thousand plus acres have burned in the Grass Valley Fire.

The Slide Fire, which has been more active today, has been burning vigorously in the Running Springs and Fredalba area, though aircraft crews have continued water drops in an effort to save the downtown area of Running Springs. Current tallies reflect that over 10,150 acres have burned on this fire, at least 200 homes have been lost, and there is no estimation of containment at this time. Over 550 firefighting personnel are assigned to the Slide Fire.
When we spoke with Firefighter Kempton earlier today, he noted that the fires are wind-driven and that “combustible materials around homes have made a difference.”

Though the Slide and Grass Valley Fires do not pose an immediate threat to the Big Bear area, we do recommend that you maintain defensible space around your home, including the clearing of pine needles and roofline gutters.

Highway 18 through Lucerne Valley does remain open, as does Highway 38. Per official sources at the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, CalTrans, the U.S. Forest Service and the California Highway Patrol, access on Highway 38 is open to all traffic, though we do suggest that those leaving the mountain during fire season carry proof of residence. Still, Officer Gary Fernandez with the CHP tells KBHR, “The back roads to Big Bear are wide open. There is no checkpoint.

”So, to recap, the Grass Valley Fire has been less active today and is now 30% contained, the Slide Fire continues to burn in a southwest direction, and at this time, there is no indication that the Big Bear Valley is in any immediate danger due to these fires burning in mountain communities to the west.
