In-N-Out Has America’s Favorite Fast Service Food Fries

As a Southern Californian, one's options for fast service food fries mostly come down to In-N-Out, Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A, and Arby’s, since those are the chains with locations in the Southland. So, it’s no surprise that In-N-Out’s fries, cut fresh daily, took the top spot in a new analysis of over 40,000 Yelp reviews, earning a 3.86 out of 5. That’s a big win for the West Coast favorite, especially since you’re not likely to come across fries from chains like Bojangles or Freddy’s around here.

Shake Shack, another local option, came in second with a solid 3.7 rating, while Chick-fil-A’s waffle fries, a familiar sight in SoCal, landed fifth at 3.4, lauded for their crispiness and sauce-dipping potential. Arby’s, also in the region, scored lower at 2.89, sitting at eighth place.

The study, put together by Seating Masters, looked at 25 locations per chain and showed that In-N-Out’s fresh-cut approach outshone bigger national chains. For context, McDonald’s and Burger King, which you might spot elsewhere, ranked near the bottom with 1.91 and 1.92 averages, respectively, while KFC’s fries tanked at 1.77. Chains like Raising Cane’s and Zaxby’s, which aren’t common in Southern California, also made the top 10, but you’d be hard-pressed to try them locally.

Here’s the top 10 from the data:

In-N-Out Burger – 3.86

Shake Shack – 3.7

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers – 3.59

Bojangles – 3.51

Chick-fil-A – 3.4

Raising Cane’s – 3.24

Zaxby’s – 2.98

Arby’s – 2.89

Hardee’s – 2.86

Checkers/Rally’s – 2.84

We, at MAXINE, believe that for us SoCal folks, it’s clear In-N-Out, Shake Shack, and Chick-fil-A are holding down the fort for fry quality options, while Arby’s lags a bit behind.

Freshness and smaller menus seem to be the key on how our continual favorite always seems to top the list, giving our local Baldwin Park In-N-Out an edge over the mass-produced national competition.
